Genial debut el de esta banda Finlandesa que, con tan solo dos años de trayectoria musical, ha conseguido fichar con la prestigiosa casa discográfica Firebox con tan solo una sola demo en el mercado (Closure Of Life) que ya apuntaba enormes maneras y que les ha valido llegar hasta la compañía finlandesa.
Bien, entrando sin más dilación a lo que nos importa. Esta joven formación nos deleita con un trabajo de Doom-Death melódico sublime. Parece ser que la escuela nórdica no para de dar grandes genios en este género. El trabajo de las guitarras está logradísimo creando auténtica depresión y tristeza... aun así, consiguen penetrar en ti, crean un aura a tu alrededor y te transportan a un mundo paralelo que, hasta que no finaliza el CD, no logras salir de él. Los pasajes de teclado, que son obra de los guitarristas, aportan esa dosis de melancolía a las canciones y recrean a la perfección las hipnóticas atmosferas necesarias para cautivarte del todo.
A lo largo de este larga durada nos encontramos con porciones de auténtico Doom-Death, muy influenciados por la vieja escuela británica y, en especial, por los My DYing Bride. Pero el estilo mayoritario, el que predomina es el Doom-Death melódico, influenciado principalmente por la hornada de grupos tales como Swallow The Sun, Rapture, Officium Triste, Pantheist y, sobretodo!!! por Draconian, en especial por Johan Ericson. Realmente, escuchando este disco encontramos la huella de este pedazo de músico en gran parte de las composiciones de Ablaze In Hatred... ya sea al estilo Draconian (dejando aparte su lado más gótico) o, incluso, al estilo Doom:vs.
Esperemos que este sea el principio de una gran trayectoria para este cuarteto finés y que sigan deleitándonos con discos de igual o mayor calidad que la que nos presentan con su debut discográfico, Deceptive Awareness. Disco totalmente recomendable.

Orgestellt wurde mir das Quartett als "Gothic Death" - was mir eine seltsame Kombination schien. Einmal eingelegt war mir klar, was sich dahinter verbirgt: Mucke, die sich standardmäßig im Verkehrsberuhigten Bereich der BPM aufhält. Extrem langsam kommen ABLAZE IN HATRED daher, bauen dabei aber eine phänomenale düstere, melancholische Atmosphäre auf. Das tiefe, langsame Grunzen von Frontmann Mika Ikonen tut da sein übriges. Das ganze zieht sich konstant durch die gesamte CD, wer auch nur Tempo 60 will, wird wohl enttäuscht werden.
Alles in Allem ist die CD für alle jene etwas, die sich sowieso von der Brücke stürzen wollen oder auch in chilligen Momenten nicht auf Grunts verzichten wollen.

You couldn't ask for a better debut album, this Finnish four piece have released possibly the most crushing Death Doom release of 2006.
The sub genre of death doom is one that very many bands can pull off, but very few pull off well, having listened to this album several times now I can safely say that this band have pulled it off excellently.
Coming in at just over 50 minutes, it is perhaps a little short for a doom release, but without any weak links, each track really is a lesson in what good death doom should be.
Lyrically and musically it is hard to fault this band, with some great melodies, crushing riffs, and powerfully wretched vocals and with all the passion and pain you expect from a doom release Ablaze In Hatred are really making a firm stamp on the doom genre.
The stand out track of this release, for me personally would be track 2 - "When the blackened candles shine", coming in at over 9 minutes this is by far the longest track on the album, and for my money the most powerful of the album, you can listen to a sample of it on the bands official website, and I would urge that you do.
Watch out for this band, they will destroy you, this release is certainly one of my favorites of 2006.

Der Strom an finnischen Bands, die sich langsamen und düsteren Sounds hingeben, ist ungebrochen. Dabei ist das Quartett weder dem seichten Dark Rock noch dem extremen Funeral Doom-Genre zuzurechnen, wenngleich sie tendenziell eher der gaaaanz langsamen Fraktion zuzuordnen sind und auch Gitarrist/Keyboarder Mika Ikonen tief growlt. Die 7 Songs bringen es immerhin auf eine Spielzeit von 52 Minuten und bei aller Langsamkeit versuchen die 4 Burschen, die Nummern aufzulockern und spannend zu halten. Liebstes Mittel sind ihnen dabei schwelgende Klampfen- und Keyboardmelodien, wie zum Beispiel im schönen ‚Howls Unknown’ oder bei ‚Constant Stillness’. In diesem Song klingen ABLAZE MY HATRED wie jugendliche Amorphis in ganz langsam. Dafür, dass es die Truppe erst seit 2 Jahren gibt, klingt das Material schon ganz gut. Wer auf traurigen Doom steht, der sich perfekt für einen nebligen Herbstabend mit schwermütigen Gedanken, Kerzenlicht und Rotwein eignet, sollte sich die Burschen mal auf dem Einkaufszettel notieren. Ich finde die Burschen zwar nicht so genial wie Shape Of Despair oder Swallow The Sun, aber aus den Knaben kann noch was werden.

Maamme doom tilanne on tällä hetkellä ilahduttavan vahvassa kuosissa, kun toinen toistaan synkempiä, tummempia ja erinomaisempia orkestereita nousee kalmistojen yläpuolelle tuon tuostakin. Esikoispitkäsoittonsa vastikään julkaissut Ablaze In Hatred liittyy reipasta vauhtia kasvavaan mananväkeen, sillä vaikka ryhmän debyytti ei uusia hautuutantereita valloitakaan on se taattua tuomiota alusta loppuun saakka.
Sopivasti vuoden synkimpään aikaan julkaistava Deceptive Awareness keskittyy sinne synkkyyden kauniimpaan laitaan, missä hautakedoilta nousee jopa joitain kukkasia kalman kylmän usvan sekaan. Hautuumaan ristit ovat tällä kertaa siis poikkeuksellisen koristeellisia ja sijoitettuna oikeinpäin, säätilana on tietysti kirkas ja tyyni täysikuu. My Dying Briden loputtomaan jälkeläisjoukkoon liittyvä Ablaze In Hatred ei siis lähde keksimään arkkua uudelleen, mutta retkue pystyy nousemaan genren keskitasolle perusasiohin turvaavalla avauksella.
Deceptive Awarenessin parhaat hetket vietetään sen melodisimman kolmanneksen parissa ja muutamissa tunnelmallisimmissa maalailuissa tuska pusertuukin jo esimerkillisesti viisuista ulos. Vaikka ryhmä ei yllä vielä ensiyrittämällä aivan sinne Swallow The Sunin, Shape Of Despairin ja kumppaneiden miehittämään mestaruus-sarjaan, laskee se nyt itselleen tukevan kivijalan tulevaisuuden taipaleita ajatellen.

Doom metal is a genre that has sprouted quite the colony despondent creations over the past few years. It’s a style that I see growing quickly, and Finland is responsible for many of these grief-stricken musicians. Helsinki newcomers, Ablaze in Hatred are no exception to the quality that oozes out of this country.
Deceptive Awareness offers an abundance of majestic melodies and hopeless death/doom, having many similarities with Sweden’s Draconian, Finland’s Swallow The Sun, and Searing Meadow. The thing that makes this debut so stunning is how well crafted the music is, which should come as no surprise considering the band has members of both Searing Meadow and Fall of the Leafe. Like most doom albums, a first listen is just scratching the surface. Deceptive Awareness is one of those albums, which will reveal itself after multiple spins.
Vocalist and guitar player Mika Ikonen has the typical harsh growls. No guttural or high shrieks, just slow mid pitched growls. Surprisingly, you can hear what he is saying. Musically, we have a Pink Floyd influenced guitar players and near ten minute opus’s. Slow riffs and keyboards create a feel that stays consistent through the entire album. This CD will drag you along. It’s a journey into desperate thoughts. What more could you ask for from a doom album?
This is a no brainer for fans of dark melodic death doom. For a debut album, Deceptive Awareness is outstanding. The production, package, and over all ride is well worth your money.

Der Bandname lässt unweigerlich hasserfüllten, destruktiven Black Metal oder zumindest heftige Death Metal Attacken vermuten, einen Moment dachte ich gar an die Schweden Ablaze My Sorrow. Bei einem kurzen Blick auf das Fireboxlogo wurde aber sofort aber klar, daß es sich hier nur um eine weitere finnische Doom-Perle handeln kann. Und selbstverständlich wurden meine Erwartungen nicht enttäuscht. Mit von der Partie sind übrigens Mitglieder von Searing Meadow und Fall of the Leafe. Anders als viele ihrer Landsmänner bewegen sich Ablaze in Hatred allerdings nicht in finstersten Funeral Doom Gefilden, sondern kreieren sehr atmosphärischen, von traurig-schönen Melodien beseelten, meist im Midtempo angesiedelten, doch stets von schnelleren Ausbrüchen durchwirkten, Doom Death, der (ohne direkte Vergleiche ziehen zu wollen) Fans von Gruppen wie Morgion, My Dying Bride oder November’s Doom sehr schnell ans Herz wachsen wird, und der nicht in absoluter Depression versinkt, sondern sich von der Schönheit des Zwielichtes treiben lässt. „Deceptive Awareness“ ist ein idealer Soundtrack für gemütliche, verträumt-melancholische Herbst- und Winterstunden im Kerzenlicht.

Dette er enkelt og greit jævlig bra. Bandet har kun holdt på siden 2004 og dette er deres første fullengder. Finnene spiller melankolsk og seig doom, litt drone og litt death. De skaper en ekte dyster og suicidal stemning ved hjelp av fantastisk treffende og iskald growl godt støttet opp av synth. Gitarer, trommer og bass stikker seg sjelden frem, her er alt skrudd perfekt sammen med stemningen som mål så du vil ikke finne noen teknisk imponerende partier her. Dette er kommunisme i praksis: samfunnet foran individet! Selv om dette nok kan høres kjedelig ut så viser ABLAZE IN HATRED at med de rette riffene kan doom være utrolig spennende og variert. Låtene har nok særpreg til at de unngår å bli kopier av seg selv, men stemningen holder taket gjennom hele albumet. Tempoet blir aldri tvunget opp for å briljere teknisk, her åler alt seg sakte forbi så harmoniskt som det kan bli i en dyster verden. Du får sju flotte låter fordelt på over 51 minutter og avslutningsvis er bare tre ting å si om denne skiva: Lovende, lovende, lovende!!!

Siendo fanático del Death/Doom actual finlandés y de grupos como Katatonia, Daylight Dies.. cayó en mis manos hace un año la promo de un joven grupo de esa nacionalidad llamado Ablaze in Hatred; "Closure of life" creo que es la promo/demo que más veces he escuchado en mi vida, no hacian nada original ni nada nuevo solo que lo que hacian lo hacian a la perfección. Un año después los chicos de Firebox (no se pierden uno, grupo bueno que sale grupo que fichan) viendo el potencial les han unido a su catálogo. Se les podría describir de la siguiente manera: si se mezclara en una batidora cualquier disco de Shape of Despair con el "Arcane rain fell" de los suecos Draconian y les quitamos las voces femeninas creo que nos saldría, salvando las distancias, este CD de Ablaze in Hatred, cosa que para muchos sera poco original o falto de ideas; para mí, seguidor acérrimo de ambos grupos, es una gozada. En este CD incluyen los tres temas de su mencionada promo "Closure of life" del 2005 más una intro(genial, casi funeral) y tres temas nuevos; no sabría destacar ninguno ya que me todos me parecen geniales, llenos de melancólicas melodías, voces guturales y ritmos a medio tiempo siguiendo como no todos los patrones del género. En definitiva, no tengo nada más que decir, sólo recomendar este disco a todos los amantes del "Melodic Melancolic Doom"(abstenerse brodequinfanáticos y similares) ya que si el mejor disco del año sigo creyendo que es el "Dismantling Devotion" de Daylight Dies, este es el segundo.

Az Ablaze in Hatred 2004-ben alakult Helsinkiben, Finnországban. Két barát, Juhani Sanna és Mika Ikonen alakította. Kezdetben lassú dark atmoszférikus zene megteremtése volt a céljuk. Majd 2004 oszén elkezdték írni az elso dalokat. 2005 tavaszán 2 fovel bovült a zenekar, Antti Hakkala (Searing Meadow) dobos és Miska Lehtivuori (Fall of the leafe) basszusgitáros lépett be az együttesbe. Augusztusban rögzítették az elso promo demó cd-t: „Closure of Life - demo 2005” címmel, amely 3 számot tartalmaz 20 percben. Ez a 20 perc, komor mélyhangú death doom metalt rejtett és hörgo énekkel van tele. Sok pozitív kritikát kapott szerte a világon. Majd 2005 októberében a Firebox-szal aláírták a szerzodést, és 2006 júniusában felvették a debüt albumot, ami szeptember elején jelent meg.
A „Deceptive Awareness”-t egy igazán lesújtó atmoszféra veszi körül. Végig lassú tempó és zord kietlenség árad a zenébol. Egy igazán jó iszapos doom-death metált rejt ez az album. A számok általában 7-8 perc hosszúak, és már ebbol is ki lehet találni, hogy itt inkább az érzelmek és a hangulat adja a zene lényegét. Tökéletes riff kombinációk és hangulatos billentyutémák jellemzik, ami a lassú folyású dörmögo mogorva énektol válik még szomorkásabbá. Nagyon meggyozo az egész album, minden a helyén van és megfeleloen illeszkedik egymáshoz az egész muben a gitár, a dob és billentyutéma. Nagyon kicsit talán a My Dying Bride régebbi idokben keletkezett zenéjéhez lehetne hasonlítani, csak talán egy kicsit változatosabb az Ablaze in Hatred zenéje. Mindenesetre a vészjósló keserves Doom/Death metal fanoknak nagyon melegen ajánlott beszerezni az albumot.

FINLANDIA. El nombre de este país provoca en todo buen amante del metal, un agradable cosquilleo que recorre la espalda y hace que ponga cara de deseo/admiración/envidia sana. Y no es para menos!! Este país ha dado brillantes momentos a los fans de todo el mundo: AMORPHIS, TAROT, CHILDREN OF BODOM, ETERNAL TEARS OF SORROW, SONATA ARCTICA....Todos tenemos alguna banda finlandesa entre nuestras favoritas.
En el caso de la banda que nos ocupa hoy, queda claro que también se convertirán en favoritos de muchos de vosotros (y me incluyo, que he disfrutado como un enano!).
ABLAZE IN HATRED no son unos desconocidos en este mundillo, se llevan labrando una bien merecida fama en el underground desde su nacimiento. Su historia comienza a principios del 2004 cuando Juhani Sanna y Mika Ikonen se deciden a crear una banda en la que verter sus ideas musicales oscuras, lentas y atmosféricas.
Tras componer algunos temas para su grabación en un estudio, buscan los músicos que les faltan. Aquí es cuando se unen a la banda el batería Antti Hakkala (SEARING MEADOW) y el bajista Miska Lehtivuori (FALL OF THE LEAFE).
En Agosto del 2005 entran finalmente en estudio para grabar su primer promo-cd, llamado "Closure Of Life". El cd es lanzado en Septiembre y llama la atención de un sello de su país, Firebox Records, que rápidamente se hace con sus servicios viendo lo que prometía el proyecto.
En Junio del 2006 la banda entra nuevamente en estudio para registrar el álbum que hoy os presentamos, "Deceptive Awareness". Lanzado a nivel internacional este pasado mes de Octubre.
El álbum consta de 7 extensos temas en algo mas de 50 minutos de duración. La producción es muy buena y la calidad como músicos, bestial!!
El tema casi instrumental que sirve de obertura a este brillante trabajo, bajo el título de "Lost", nos engatusa con unas guitarras lentas y ritmos pesados, adornados con unos teclados pomposos. La banda sabe intercalar momentos muy ambientales que consiguen realzar mucho ese maravilloso sonido que crean.
"When The Blackened Candles Shine" se nos presenta con un ritmo doom lento, melancólico y esa voz gutural y triste de su vocalista. Destacar el enorme trabajo de los dos guitarras creando unas maravillosas melodías llenas de oscuridad y tristeza. Unos teclados apoyan a la banda cuando hay que magnificar aún mas ese sonido y pasajes de dark ambient cuando menos te lo esperas, rematan un grandioso tema. Todo amante del doom sabrá apreciar en su justa medida esta canción.
"Howls Unknown" es el siguiente corte, de ritmo mas vivo pero impregnado de esa aura melancólica que rodea todos los temas de este disco.
Unos ritmos que se apartan del típico doom y que los acercan a la sonoridad de bandas dark metal como podrían ser aquellos polacos de SIRRAH, se mezclan con otros en plan funeral doom, recordando a los queridos MY DYING BRIDE (los antiguos). El vocalista también sabe variar su tono de voz para adaptarlo a uno un poco mas malévolo. Uno de mis temas preferidos.
"Constant Stillness" es un tema muy relajado, perfecto para oírlo a oscuras. Su ritmo pausado y melódico nos va envolviendo sin darnos cuenta en la red que esta banda ha sabido tejer. En los casi 9 minutos que dura este tema, intercalan algunos ritmos ultra lentos y pesados, y nuevamente, esos detallitos ambientales que ya mostraron en anteriores temas.
"Ongoing Fall" nos acecha con un ritmo hipnótico, en la vena oscura y triste de anteriores temas. El sonido de guitarras es sublime y la voz de Mika es perfecta, super lenta, alargando las palabras. Gran tema.
"To Breathe And To Suffocate" comienza con unos ritmos a lo KATATONIA, melancólicos y perfectamente ejecutados por los guitarristas. Un ritmo más acelerado de lo normal sirve de colchón para que encima, el otro guitarrista, deje caer esas enormes melodías. La banda intercala varios ritmos diferentes en su duración, llegándonos a recordar a bandas de black/doom en unos momentos y en otros a ritmos funeral doom. Un tema perfecto, dedicado a aquellos que no creen que se puede tocar doom y sonar variado.
"Closure Of Life" es el tema que cierra este disco. Un tema lento y depresivo, con esas guitarras melancólicas a las que ya nos tienen acostumbrados y la voz tomando una entonación mas "pastosa". También intercalan pasajes dark y algún ritmo a lo viejo doom inglés. Buen final.
Hacía tiempo que no oía esta clase de doom y he de reconocer que me he enamorado de esta banda. Para todo buen amante del doom melancólico, el funeral doom y curiosos varios, esta obra se me antoja casi imprescindible.
Los cuatro músicos están a gran nivel en este disco, destacando quizás a sus guitarristas, por esas enormes melodías. Sin dudarlo, un regalo para los oídos. Grandes!!

Another Finnish doom metal band, and (almost) as usual it’s Firebox that’s delivering the goods. Ablaze In Hatred distinct themselves a bit in comparison to most other Finnish colleagues, as the Danes in Saturnus are the closest reference in my ears, due to the more melodic & emotional guitar melodies in the songs. Fans of Swallow The Sun might also find this album worthy of a purchase.
It’s slow and melancholic, and the tempo doesn’t differ all that much from one song to the next. This makes some of the songs hard to differ from each other though, as they use pretty similar melody lines in the songs. Still, it’s mournful and beautiful for a doomshead to listen to, and it gives me a calm, pleasant feeling inside. And that’s a fine quality this album possesses. All in all this is a nice debut that may bear even greater fruits on the albums to come. This one’s recommended to ye mourners out there.

Talvi on tulossa, puiden lehdet heijastavat väriloistollaan elämän ehtoopuolta ja syysmasennus pukkaa päälle. Doomia koneistoon ja mieli entistä apeammaksi. Näin ainakin voisi tuumia kera synkkien aatosten, kun parin vuoden ikäisen doom-ryhmä Ablaze in Hatredin esikoislevy Deceptive Awareness takoo melakoliaa mielen alasimella.
Hyvää työtä on tämä nelikko kyllä tehnytkin. Viisikymmenminuuttiseen levyyn on taltioitu melodisin sävyin, junnaavin riffein ja mörinälauluin ahdistuksen ja masennuksen vivahteet. Melopitoisen kuolometallin perimältä haiskahtavan doom metal -orkesterin musiikillinen taide on samalla kaunista että vihlovaa. Musiikista tuntuu löytyvän samoja piirteitä kuin vaikkapa Rapturelta, Shape of Despairilta ja miksei myös legendaariselta My Dying Brideltä, jos vanhoja levyjä muistella tohtii.
Yhtymäkohdistaan huolimatta AiH ei kuulosta miltään näiltä, vaikka etenkin edellä mainittu SoD tuleekin mieleen aika ajoin. Hidastempoisen kitaroinnin ja möräkän verbaalisen ulosannin lisäksi maisemia on maalailtu koskettimien avulla. Näiden rooli on ehkä määrällisesti vähäinen, mutta ratkaisu on toimiva ja hyvällä maulla toteutettu.
Aivan äärimmäisimmästä funeral doomista innostuvat eivät välttämättä koe Deceptive Awarenessin melodista ja jopa keskitempoista ulosantia omakseen. Toisaalta, juuri helpohko lähestyttävyys vie levyllä hyvin mukanaan, jopa tällaisen harvakseltaan doomista innostuvan riipivyyden ja synkistelyn metsästäjän. Oman tukensa taiteelle on antanut selkeäksi hiottu soundimaailmansa. Homma toimii mainiosti, joskin pari korniutta hipovaa laulukohtaa hieman tätä ajoittain latistaakin.
Liekö vaikutusta itse ajankohdalla, mutta tämä debyytti toimii ja iskee osuvan hyvin kylkiluiden väliin. Pienellä biisien viilauksella ja heikoimpien kohtien tasoituksella teos olisi ollut vielä kertaluokkaa toimivampi. Kaikessa melankolisuudessaan kuitenkin onnistunut teos.

The Finnish Draconian (without any female vocals) has risen and operates under the moniker Ablaze In Hatred! This means I was immediately impressed when I heard 'Deceptive Awareness'. Fast deciders know enough now and they can go shopping and buy this debut album without hesitation. As for the others: here is a more detailed review.
It is a young band, founded in 2004 when two friends, Juhani Sanna (guitars) and Mika Ikonen (vocals, guitars, keyboards), decided to create music which was dark and slow, but at the same time very heavy and atmospheric. They start to write music for a first promo CD. In the Spring of 2005 drummer Antti Hakkala (Searing Meadow) and bass player Miska Lehtivuori (Fall Of The Leafe) join the band. Soon after that the promo was recorded (released in September 2005). The positive response leads to a contract with pre-eminent doom metal label Firebox Records in October 2005, followed by writing more material to record a full length CD. That has become 'Deceptive Awareness', recorded in June 2006 at the Noisecamp Studios by Kari Nieminen and produced by the band themselves. The band appears to be very talented, for the album has a first-rate sound.
'Lost (The Overture)' takes its time to come to full bloom with a murky Pink Floyd alike intro and plucking guitars until heaven's been split by slow, dawdling doom riffs. Not that much vocals in here and these are deep grunts. But this is only a small appetizer. The following nine minutes long 'When The Blackened Candles Shine' shows more of the true intentions of Ablaze In Hatred. Just like the magnificent riffing in 'Howls Unknown' with a majority of growling vocals and a few primordial screams which pierce you to the very marrow. But it is only during 'Constant Stillness' that I prick my ears and think "This really sounds like Draconian". The slow, compelling riffs, the whispering voice regularly swelling to succulent, gravel-throated grunts and the typical melodic guitar lines who have that wailing sound. These are my favourite doom songs: approachable, soaring guitar melodies, voices in an undertone passing into growling grunts, an arcane intermezzo with mysterious Pink Floyd sounds, followed by an eruption with a climax. The dignified slow riffs of 'Ongoing Fall' are graced with elegant fluent soloing again. Totally the guitar style of Johan Ericson of Draconian and he is openly influenced by David Gilmour (Pink Floyd). Maybe we can make a thesis about the influence of Pink Floyd on doom metal bands. Seems like a fertile mission to me, just think about the guitarists of Anathema, Draconian and now Ablaze In Hatred. By the way, I just read that they recommend Ablaze In Hatred to Anathema fans. Not an odd idea at all. As occluding track, this full length album also includes the main composition of the promo 'Closure To Life'. This album is a stunner and a new name in doom metal land we have to reckon with has risen from the ashes!

Katatonia are a doom metal success story, and it started with Dance of December Souls. So it's only natural that such an album would inspire several understudies, the most recent of which is Ablaze in Hatred.
The Finnish which should tell you a number of things, doom is about as regionally different as death metal is) doomsters' debut, Deceptive Awareness, isn't necessarily album of the year, but it'll please several fans of Daylight Dies, Swallow the Sun, and of course, earlier Katatonia; The vocals especially are amongst the Swallow the Sun variety, relying on atmosphere-intensive melodic death / doom that conjures forth epic feelings of a vindictive depression, and they do so well.
These songs bring a very heavy feeling to your heart. Their only real problem is that the music, though weighty, tends to meld together after awhile, feeling like it could've been one fifty minute-long song instead of splicing it in to seven.
Regardless, Deceptive Awareness is a decent album that should tide everyone over until Swallow the Sun's next release.

Es ist mal wieder Zeit für Death/Doom. ABLAZE OF HATRED aus Finnland scheinen einen Narren an diesem Sound gefressen zu haben, zelebrieren sie diesen Sound fast so souverän wie solche Genrevorreiter namens SWALLOW THE SUN oder MY DYING BRIDE. Klar kommen ABLAZE OF HATRED aus Finnland, woher denn auch sonst, außer den oben genannten Engländern fallen mir spontan keine Bands ein, die solche Melancholie in ihren Sound fließen lassen. ABLAZE OF HATRED ist fast noch langsamer als das Debut von SWALLOW THE SUN, welche vor allem stimmlich, und was das gesamte Songwriting angeht, ein guter Vergleich sind, obwohl man schon gleich sagen kann, dass die Genialität nicht ganz erreicht werden kann, aber wer erwartet auch sowas? Trotzdem haben wir hier eine wahre Perle dieser Musik. "Constant Stillness" ist sowas wie der Ohrwurm des Albums, welcher mit einer wunderschönen wie gleichsam hoffnungsvollen und traurigen Melodie aufwartet. Das Tempo ist sehr langsam, die Melodieführung sehr simpel, aber gleichzeitig effektiv.
Danach kann jeder Song absolut punkten, obwohl hin und wieder eine kleine Länge in den Songs vermutet werden kann, doch darüber lässt sich hinwegsehen, da man bei ABLAZE OF HATRED problemlos vom kleinen Bruder von SWALLOW THE SUN sprechen kann. Wenn auf dem nächsten Album sich Songs im Stile von "Under The Waves" oder "Swallow (Horror Pt.I) befinden, steht der großen Karriere eigentich nichts mehr im Weg, höchtens zuwenig Promotion.

Est-ce que la Finlande est le pays où le taux de suicide est le plus élevé du monde ? Car ce pays est le pourvoyeur officiel du monde entier en ce qui concerne les groupes de Doom Death dépressifs. On peut dire sans hésiter que SHAPE OF DISPAIRE a eu et continu d’avoir une influence considérable sur la scène Metal de son pays et du monde entier! Avec des adeptes comme MY SHAMEFUL, AHAB et maintenant voici les quasi inconnus de ABLAZE IN HATRED qui sortent leur premier album : Deceptive Awareness. Le seul de la bande qui pourrait être éventuellement reconnu est Miska Lehtivuori à la basse pour avoir jouer avec FALL OF THE LEAFE.
Comme ses compatriotes, ABLAZE IN HATRED propose une musique pachydermique, d’une lourdeur et d’une lenteur plombante. Aucun artifice inutile n’est présent, par là il faut entendre chant féminin ou autres violons… la musique est basée sur le son bien gras des guitares et la voix gutturale et très grave de Mika Ikonen. Les claviers, discrets mais efficaces, ajoutent une touche très personnelle et majestueuse.
Ce qui est déprimant avec ces finlandais, c’est qu’ils arrivent à jouer une musique lente, avec des structures épurées sans tomber dans le piège de devenir ennuyeux. A aucun moment on a envie de zapper tel ou tel morceaux. Le secret est qu’il y a toujours un petit détail de rien du tout qui fait avancer le schmilblick, un léger changement de rythme, une ligne de basse innovante, une nappe de synthé inattendue… bref, malgré la longueur des titres de Deceptive Awareness, ABLAZE IN HATRED arrive à maintenir l’auditeur attentif à chaque seconde de sa musique, et tant mieux tant sa lourdeur devient planante par moments : « To Breathe And To Suffocate ». Belle performance car il serait facile de tomber dans un ennui profond.
Les morceaux se laissent écouter avec nostalgie pour broyer ses idées noires et en tous cas, grâce aux titres : « When The Blackened Candles Shine » et surtout le somptueux « Ongoing Fall », que la tristesse est belle. Les profondeurs du néant sont proches, ABLAZE IN HATRED a mis le fond des abysses en musique : « Closure Of Life ». Pour un premier album, on peut parler d’une vraie réussite.

Ai ai ai! Nå er det lenge siden finske Firebox har tatt tak i et såpass interessant doom-metal-band. Ablaze In Hatred, som blant annet består av medlemmer fra band som Searing Meadow, Fall of The Leaf og MyGrain. De to sistnevnte har jeg tidligere vært innom her på metal-norge, uten at de hadde noe særlig å skrive hjem om.
Ablaze In Hatred, derimot, beveger seg i det svært tiltalende lydlandskapet band som Shape of Despair dominerer. Her er det snakk om seig, melodisk doom metal, med lange, tunge partier, dørgende dyp vokal, sorgtunge og fengende melodier og en blytung atmosfære.I både stil og sound, så er faktisk dette bandet til tider skremmende likt Shape of Despair, med det unntak at Ablaze In Hatred vrenger opp tempoet i mellom og viser mer til sine death metal-røtter. Bandet har ikke gjort noe venstrehåndsjobb med noe på denne utgivelsen, det er kvalitet i alle ledd – produksjonen er seig og ypperlig, alle låtene holder en høy standard, innpakningen ser utmerket ut og låtmessig sliter jeg med å finne noen dødpunkter.
Det eneste jeg kan trekke ned litt er kanskje at sjettelåta, ”To Breathe and to suffocate” er til tider litt vel lik Shape of Despair. Det er ikke særlig med tvil om hvor Ablaze In Hatred har hentet deler av inspirasjonen fra iallefall. Men det må man bare se forbi, for det låter fett som bare juling. Sammen med The Fall of Every Seasons kommende debutplate, er dette en av de platene i år som har greid å skape en mettet og sorgtung stemning, uten at det svulstig eller overdrevent. Dette bandet kan doomen sin. Anbefales!

It seems as if the world is getting sadder of late, if you go with the sheer amount of Doom releases of late. There are two main addresses for this style at the moment, Finnish Firebox and Russian Solitude Productions and ABLAZE IN HATRED hail from Finnish Turku and subsequently are under contract with Firebox Records.
Now with a name like that you would expect something truly brutal, be it Death or Black Metal, but instead this quintet is immersing itself somewhere between regular Doom and Funeral Doom Metal, so delivering the darkest and most sombre music you could imagine. The atmosphere ABLAZE IN HATRED conjure up is one of utter greyness and melancholy and will drag your mood down, no matter how happy you had been before.
Even though “Lost (The Overture)” is technically the intro, it still clocks in at over five minutes, and is an intense and atmospheric opening for this album, still holding up a very distinct Funeral Doom mood that breaks the ground for what is to follow in “When The Blackened Candles Shine”, which can be characterized by four simple words: sloooooow (meaning the music), deep (meaning the vocals), melodic (the music again) and good. Doom and especially the Funeral Doom variant are usually deemed very narrow in spectrum, but once you see beyond the sheer speed (or lack of) a track like the just mentioned or “Howls Unknown” display many different shades of Doominess, here with more melody, there with dark atmosphere and even changing up the tempo of the bass drums up to double-bass (don’t get me wrong, the overall tempo still is slow), giving us a great display of the variety at hand here.
Doom indeed is one of the most featured styles in my mp3 player right now and ABLAZE IN HATRED are one hell of a hopeful newcomer that I can only wholeheartedly recommend to all fans of the slow and they soon could grow into one of the country’s premier acts of the doom and gloom!

Es scheint so als ob die Welt in letzter Zeit trauriger wird, wenn man sich die schiere Anzahl von Doom-Releases ansieht. Es gibt für diesen Stil momentan zwei Hauptadressen, die Finnen von Firebox und die Russen von Solitude Productions und ABLAZE IN HATRED kommen aus dem finnischen Turku und stehen daher bei Firebox Records unter Vertrag.
Mit einem solchen Namen würde man nun eigentlich etwas so richtig Brutales erwarten, sei es nun Death oder Black Metal, aber stattdessen taucht dieses Quintett in die graue Masse zwischen „normalem“ und Funeral Doom Metal ein, liefern uns also mit die düsterste Musik, die wir bekommen können. Die Atmosphäre, welche ABLAZE IN HATRED hier heraufbeschwören, ist absolute Grauheit und Melancholie und wird eure Stimmung runterziehen, egal wie fröhlich ihr vorher auch wart.
Auch wenn “Lost (The Overture)” technisch gesehen das Intro ist, so ist es doch mehr als fünf Minuten lang und ist ein intensives und atmosphärisches Tor zu diesem Album, dabei dennoch eine deutliche Funeral Doom-Stimmung aufbauend und ins folgende “When The Blackened Candles Shine” überleitend, das ich mit vier einfachen Worten beschreiben könnte: laaaaangsaaam (die Musik), tief (die Vocals), melodiös (wieder die Musik) und gut. Doom und vor allem Funeral Doom werden allgemein als stilistisch sehr eng angesehen, aber wenn man es schafft jenseits der Geschwindigkeit (oder des Mangels selbiger) zu schauen, dann wird man hören, dass ein Track wie der eben genannte oder das folgende “Howls Unknown” viele verschiedene Schattierungen des Doom beinhalten, hier mit mehr Melodie, dort mit einer düsteren Atmosphäre und selbst mit wechselndem Tempo der Bass-Drum bis hin zu Double-Bass (versteht mich nicht falsch, der Grundtenor ist immer noch sehr langsam), eine herrliche Bandbreite darlegend.
Doom ist in letzter Zeit der wohl am häufigsten in meinem mp3-Player anzufindende Stil und ABLAZE IN HATRED sind ein ganz starker Newcomer, den ich allen Fans des Langsamen nur nur absolut empfehlen kann und der bald zu einem der stärksten nationalen Acts heranwachsen könnte!

Groupe Finlandais à peine sorti de l'oeuf (ils ont à peine deux ans d'existence), ABLAZE IN HATRED a ce qu'on pourrait appeler du bol, car en moins d'un an ils sortent une première démo et signe un contrat... Tout le monde n'arrive pas à le faire, et c'est pour cela que j'ai lancé une oreille très attentive sur ce "Deceptive Awareness", qui comme son nom l'indique, ne va pas être une compilation de titres Folk... Effectivement, le moins que l'on puisse dire est que nos Finlandais ont une certaine attirance pour le Doom et le Dark, tant leur musique est sombre, désespérée et lente. Sortant en même temps que le nouvel album des maîtres du genre, MY DYING BRIDE, on pourrait s'en faire pour lui, mais fort heureusement ABLAZE IN HATRED ne va pas trop piétiner les mêmes plates-bandes et a peaufiné sa musique pour la rendre personnelle, et désespérément mélancolique. Superbe par ses mélodies, sa noirceur et son désespoir, cet album est un "must have" que tous les fans un poil éclairés de Doom et de Dark tenteront de se procurer...

Ever since I’ve been to Helsinki I keep saying it: ‘Finland is the absolute heavy metal country number one.’ It was no surprise to me that so many unknown bands stunned me at the Finland Metal Expo, nor that Iron Maiden scheduled two shows for a country with only five million inhabitants nor that Ablaze in Hatred is a new qualitative funeral doom band.
Do not expect the staccato guitar riffs of the early doom days but think of slow rhythms, melancholic melodies and keyboards that attribute to the emotions and there it is, Ablaze in Hatred. Now I’m critical on the forehand with doom metal. The very highest perquisite to me personally is that I’ll become somehow introvert and tragic because of the music and that the songs grab me down and make me wonder.
Now, Ablaze in Hatred manages just to do this by creating long, slow songs that seem to drown in tragedy. What surprised me mostly when listening to the album at first is the sense for good songwriting; all the melodies are intertwined naturally and for the first time I can remember I do not feel awkward by the length of the songs, which is above seven minutes and more. Especially ‘When the blackened candles shine’ is a magnificent treat during the, most of the time, dark winters with its multi-dimension melodies..
I found it hard to describe this album since it is obviously influenced by My Dying Bride but is certainly not a copycat. The vocals consist of grunts most of the time (backing screams do occur) but they are mostly not present. Instead, simple melodies will guide you through the deep dimensions of Deceptive Awareness which make you feel both depressed and satisfied at the same time. Therefore, I’d say you should really listen to this first before considering a purchase. This album is a tough one, but simply one of the best of its kind in the scene.

Yet another superb addition to Finland's (and Firebox's) legacy of rending, emotion laced death death/doom in the vein of Swallow the Sun and Shape of Despair.
Review:
If you are a fan of the above bands as well as the likes of Draconian, Officium Triste, Pantheist and such, this is a no-brainer, as Ablaze In Hatred deliver a superbly depressing and mesmerizing slab of heaving, melodic melancholy death/doom.
As with most of the above bands there is a tangible early My Dying Bride influence, and these morose Fins have simply added some synths, and flocked the woeful riffs with simple layers of draining harmonies and deep growls, a process the Fins seem to have perfected to no end.
br> After the introductory “Lost (The Overture)”, the band leap into the expected but welcome opening riff of “When The Blackened Candles Shine”, which features a stunning ‘chorus' (at 2:39 and 5:40) of utterly despondent harmonies and crushing riffage, that will make you tear up. “Howls Unknown” picks up the pace just a smidgeon to a Rapture/Insomnium/Noumena sort of dreary lope but the soul crushing yet elegant mope returns for the 8 minute “Constant Stillness” with superb use of minimalist solos in artful solace and a hopelessly desperate climax. The controlled yet morose rumble of “Ongoing Fall” is pure My Dying Bride complete with haunting, wrist opening piano line.
If you are not dangling from the rafters or laying in your own blood by this point in the album, the evocatively somber “To Breathe and Suffocate” and the sheer knee wilting beauty and sadness of closer “Closure of Life” (be sure to stick around for the reprise) will ensure that you end the record free from your mortal coil.
Bereft of interludes, female vocals or random injections of speed, and glossed with the now familiar pristine Finnish doom production (thick guitars, earthy drums), Deceptive Awareness is a stellar debut in a genre loaded with stellar albums.

Ablaze In Hatred er et relativt ungt death/doom band fra Finland (go figure…), der faktisk kun har eksisteret siden 2004, men allerede har deres debutalbum ”Deceptive Awareness” ude nu.
Visse læsere har måske efterhånden fået indtrykket, at Onkel Knudsen her elsker doom, og de har faktisk så ganske ret, og jeg må da også indrømme, at jeg er ganske begejstret for finnernes debut album her (hvad er der mon galt med de folk siden de laver alt det depressive musik?).
Ablaze In Hatred opfinder ikke hjulet på dette udspil, langt fra. De læner sig troligt op af genrestørrelser som My Dying Bride, Anathema og Paradise Lost, selv om bandet nogle gange klinger en smule af doomgudfædre som Candlemass og Trouble. Så alt i alt en ret forudsigelig plade, som ikke vil overbevise tvivlere, men mindre kan også gøre det for mig, og en del andre doom fans.
Tag nu for eksempel ”When the Blackened Candles Shine”. Det nummer har simpelthen alt hvad hjertet kan begære. Der er fede underspillede melodier, der langsomt kryber under huden på en, der er sagte, atmosfæriske keyboard passager og herlig brutal stemmeføring fra sanger/guitarist Mika Ikonen. Nummeret tonser pisse tungt og sørgmodigt derudaf og tager absolut ingen fanger. Den samme beskrivelse kan bruges om det efterfølgende, og mere tempofyldte ”Howls Unknown”.
Men der er desværre kun et nummer på ”Deceptive Awareness”, hvor alt virkeligt går op i en højere enhed, og det er i nummeret ”Ongoing Fall”, der er noget af det bedste doom jeg længe har hørt. Det kan selv mestrene i My Dying Bride ikke gøre bedre, og sangen vil næppe forlade min mp3 lige foreløbig.
Den eneste grund til, at jeg ikke smider det femte pentagram oven i hatten er, at bandet kører lidt for meget i tomgang i numrene ”Constant Stillness” og ”Closure of Life”. Da er riffs og melodier simpelthen ikke stærke nok til, at kunne tåle den megen repetition, men det er mindre skæmmende detaljer, der ikke kan afholde mig fra at anbefale dette album til alle doomfansene derude. Det er et perfekt soundtrack til en mørk tid. Hulk…jeg vil ikke mere…

Kotimainen doom metal on nostanut vahvasti päätään muutaman viime vuoden aikana muun muassa bändien kuten Swallow the Sun, Reverend Bizarre ja Shape of Despair menestyslevyjensä myötä. Doomin suosion kasvaessa, on genreen alkanut nousta uusia yrittäjiä tiheään tahtiin. Uusimpana näistä on juuri debyyttilevynsä Firebox Recordsin kautta julkaiseva melodisempaa tuomiota edustava Ablaze In Hatred.
Deceptive Awareness käynnistyy intromaisella reilut viisiminuuttisella Lost (the Overture):lla. ”Intro” toimii oivana porttina itse biiseihin, ja antaa jo sellaisenaan hyvän kuvan siitä mitä tuleman pitää. Bändin ainoaksi jääneeltä viralliselta demolta albumille on päätynyt kaikki raidat, jotka ovat levyllä When the Blakened Candles Shine, Constant Stillness ja To Breathe And to Suffocate. Nämä kappaleet kuulostavat myös albumilla vakuuttavimmalta tavaralta. Ideaa, tarttuvuutta ja synkkiä tunnelmia tarjoilee tyylikkäästi myös mieleen helposti jäävä uudempaa materiaalia edustava Ongoing Fall. Uudemmat biisit ovat aavistuksen tasapaksumpia, mutta se ei kokonaisuutta ajatellen hirveästi häiritse, koska mistään unettavasta doomista ei ole kysymys. Bändin materiaalia voisi sanoa jonkinlaiseksi Swallow the Sunin ja My Dying Briden ominaispiirteitä ja omaa juttua sopivaksi keitokseksi miksailevaksi..
Deceptive Awareness on vahva näyte, mutta aikoinaan jo demon kuulleena enemmän mielenkiinnolla odotan, mihin suuntaan yhtye kasvaa tulevaisuudessa ja lunastaako se lopullisesti paikkansa suomi-doomin keulapaikoilta.

Újabb doom/death metal Finnországból. Ha ez így folytatódik, akkor lassan a metalcore alapú muzsikákat letaroló trendé terebélyesedik a My Dying Bride munkásságán felnőtt szomorkás zenekarok áradata, amely most még felfutóban van és így jobbára erősebb produktumokat termel ki. Jelen csapat 2004-ben alakult és egy tavaly megjelent demó után szerződtette őket az efféle belassult súlyosságokra szakosodott, a Firebox Records sub-labeljeként működő Firedoom Music.
A MDB hatása mellett, a jelenkori követők közül talán a honfitárs Swallow the Sun és az ausztrál The Eternal nevét tudnám megemlíteni, mint hasonló zenei területen dolgozó csapatokat. Bár a nemrégiben bemutatott új Draconian lemez (ismertető itt) is nagyjából ezen a vonalon mozog, viszont azzal ellentétben a finneknél hiányzik a gótikus beütés. Ellenben a dalok még nem igazán kiforrottak, az igazi karakter még kialakulóban van. De szerintem jó úton járnak, mert maga a muzsika élvezhető, a lassabb témák sem fulladnak unalomba. Zeneileg sem lehet beléjük kötni, egyrészt mert a bivaly hangzással (Noisecamp Studio) nagyon jól megdörren a lemez, másrészt a zenészek is érzik a stílust. Zakatolnak a gitárok (nagyon jó témákat pengetnek), gyomroz a lábdob – ennek ellenére szépen díszítik apró dolgokkal a játékukat. A szintetizátor nyújtotta lehetőségeket is jól használják ki: egyfajta nyomasztó érzés járja át a lemez auráját. Amit természetesen a gyomorból érkező durva hörgés még tovább fokoz. A dalok közül egyedül csak a „Constant Stillness” nem jött be; ez nekem tucat megoldásokkal operáló dolognak tűnik és egy kicsit unalmasba megy át.
Ez egy ígéretes zenekar által készített jó lemez, nagyszerű bemutatkozás. Kíváncsian várom a folytatást.

Trauerangriff aus Richtung Finnland. Auch ABLAZE IN HATRED ist die Dunkelheit des hohen Nordens mächtig aufs Gemüt geschlagen – zumindest geben sie das vor. Mit dem MY DYING BRIDE-Doom von "Deceptive Awareness" suhlt sich das Quartett konsequent und ausgiebig in Selbstmitleid und Resignation, und das Ende lässt es mehr oder weniger locker auf sich zukommen. Ändern kann man sowieso nichts, folglich sollte man auf Versuche, den Kopf noch mal aus der Schlinge zu ziehen, verzichten. Der Bandname wirkt aufgrund dessen auch eher unpassend, denn "Hass" setzt immerhin voraus, dass irgendwo noch Energien vorhanden sind und das Lämpchen noch an ist.
Im Herbst kommt dieser Soundtrack zum grundlosen (oder berechtigten) Schlechtfühlen natürlich besonders prima, und die Jungs haben ihn so gut zusammengestellt, dass man sich gerne davon runterziehen lässt. Bevor man allerdings in die angemessene Depri-Stimmung kommen kann, gilt es, den etwas verunglückten Opener 'Lost (The Overture)' hinter sich zu lassen. Dieser macht zwar unmissverständlich klar, welche Richtung die Scheibe einschlagen wird, mutet jedoch eher dröge an und bestätigt somit einige der Vorurteile, die gegenüber diesem Sound existieren. Das war's dann aber mit der Langatmigkeit. Ab dem Volltreffer 'When The Blackened Candles Shine' spielen die Kerle ihre Stärken immer öfter aus. Insbesondere die traurig-schönen Gitarren- und Keyboardmelodien landen klar im oberen Bereich der Seufz-Skala und qualifizieren Songs wie die todtriste Grabesschleichfahrt 'Constant Stillness', das mit dem Begriff "elegisch" noch sehr beschönigend umschriebene 'Ongoing Fall' oder 'To Breathe And To Suffocate' (das erste Verb kann getrost außer Acht gelassen werden; hier atmet bald gar nix mehr) für rotweingeschwängerte Diskussionsrunden über die Ungerechtigkeiten des (eigenen) Lebens.
Der Einzige, der das Haupt in diesem Tränenmeer halbwegs über Wasser halten kann, ist Shouter Mika Ikonen, der mit seinen finsteren Growls noch den agilsten Eindruck macht, vor allem deshalb, weil er seine Grunz-Linie nicht für klagenden Klargesang verlässt. Und das dürfte ABLAZE IN HATRED auch für Leute interessant machen, denen MY DYING BRIDE-Aarons Clean-Vocals nicht liegen und die trotzdem genau diesen Sound haben wollen; da soll es ein paar geben. Klar ist aber auch, dass man dann qualitativ ein paar Abstriche machen muss. Kompositorisch reichen die Finnen noch nicht an die abnippelnde Braut heran. Aber da wird mit dem zweiten Album sicher noch mehr passieren. Und trotzdem: gute Platte!

Doom metal has hardly ever inspired or excited me. Its slower than slow progressions and darker than dark atmospheres have just never fitted into my picture of the world, and certainly not into my music taste. But every once in a while, a band pops up and is just so damn good at what they do it's hard to not be stunned. We saw Ahab do it earlier this year with their fantastic album "The Call Of The Wretched Sea" and Saturnus with "Veronica Decides To Die", and now it's turn for Finnish Ablaze In Hatred's debut album "Deceptive Awareness".
As always in doom metal, the atmospheres are almost symphonic in nature, and you could easily imagine a whole orchestra accompanying the band while they perform their songs. As you might imagine, this causes the sound to be full of grandeur, and allows you to venture through your mind picturing the kind of landscapes their awe-inspiring songs portray.
The riffs sound confident in their progressions, and despite their slowness, indicate massive songwriting talent from a band as young as this. Vocalist Mika Ikonen uses his voice as an additional instrument much like Opeth's Mikael Åkerfeldt, which thunders and rages above all of the instruments at low range, yet with strangely oozing melody embedded to it, underlining the band's ability to understand subtle melody.
If you are able to put up with the constant doomsday atmosphere where depression and darkness dominate the sound, as in the darkly beautiful "When The Blackened Candles Shine", or in the quite literally titled "Constant Stillness", then Ablaze In Hatred is among the best doom releases this year. It's not an easy listen, but getting into it is worth the effort.

No son pocas las veces en las que un disco del que no tienes referencia, un grupo del que apenas acabas de descubrir que debuta con el trabajo que tienes en las manos, te llama poderosamente la atención y se convierte en una grata sorpresa, un descubrimiento. ABLAZE IN HATRED es uno de esos grupos que cautiva y consigue brillar con fuerza propia.
Sabido es que no supone gran riesgo confiar casi a ciegas en los grupos de Doom Metal procedentes de Finlandia. Firebox sigue encontrando vetas de oro de muchos quilates en las frías y yermas tierras de su país. Con el beneficio de la duda en el bolsillo, este cuarteto no sólo lo aprovecha sino que rinde armas a la altura de las previsiones más positivas. Los miembros de AIH han acumulado experiencia en grupos como FALL OF THE LEAFE o SEARING MEADOW, no demasiado cercanos en lo musical a lo que ahora proyecta “Deceptive Awareness”: un mundo en sombras, regido por la melancolía y la fatalidad. Un mundo reflejado en un espejo de ébano pulido en el fuego del Doom / Death Metal, forjado en las fraguas de DRACONIAN, OFFICIUM TRISTE o ilustres compatriotas como SHAPE OF DESPAIR o SWALLOW THE SUN, sin dejar en el olvido la noble simiente primordial de ANATHEMA o MY DYING BRIDE.
Sin las voces femeninas o la profusión de arreglos que caracteriza a DRACONIAN, sí se inspiran en los riffs y las melodías de la vertiente más Doom de los suecos (digamos sus últimos trabajos, “Arcane Rain Fell” y “The Burning Halo”). Esas melodías evocadoras y tristes, volubles entre lo lejano y lo íntimo, que sobrevuelan como cuervos sobre la base mortuoria que conforman los pesados riffs y la oscura y profunda voz gutural de Mika Ikonen. La única distinción, el sello de identidad, de ABLAZE IN HATRED es su calidad, su capacidad para hacer buenas canciones y tocar la más oscura fibra sensible. Su música acoge los rasgos prototípicos del género, los adapta y recrea a la perfección, sin demasiada aportación propia pero con un nivel que lleva a pensar que el asiento de este cuarteto está reservado a la derecha de los gigantes de su género.
La grabación, como ya sucedió con la demo “Closure Of Life”, ha corrido a cargo del propio grupo con la ayuda inestimable de Kari Nieminen en los Noisecamp Studios. El sonido es denso y pesado; las atmósferas descargan su peso en los teclados y las guitarras mientras que la voz se hace cavernosa en los fragmentos más rugosos, misteriosa en los más evasivos. Durante 51 minutos, “Deceptive Awareness” viaja del limbo al purgatorio, y de allí directamente al infierno sin apenas tocar tierra mundana. Una experiencia siempre emparentada a esta veta -cuando se hace con gusto y calidad- del Doom / Death.
Como lo que es, un trabajo de pulcro acabado, “Deceptive Awareness” cuida el recibimiento con “Lost (The Overture)” en la que da la bienvenida a un paisaje melancólico, místico y denso, y la despedida con el cuidado final de “Closure Of Life,” que sucede al último y hermoso crescendo del disco. Entre medias, mecido por el oscuro océano musical de riffs mortuorios y melodías de un tenebroso romanticismo, se viaja sin rumbo del abrazo onírico y emocional (a lo DRACONIAN) de “When The Blackened Candles Shine” al tono más brutal y áspero (pese a la luz de las melodías) de “Howls Unknown”, que muerde con colmillos de polvo, hacia la solemnidad y la emoción Doom de “Constant Stillness” y “Ongoing Fall” -con riffs clásicos en sus extremos de escuela SABBATH-, hasta naufragar en la tenue y hermosa fuerza de “To Breathe And To Suffocation”. Un viaje pesaroso y hermoso, romántico y brutal, hiriente y placentero.
Mika Ikonen (voz, guitarra, teclado, y encargado de buena parte de la música y todas las letras) y compañía harían bien en no descuidar al enorme vástago que han engendrado. A pesar de mantener su actividad en otras bandas, ABLAZE IN HATRED exige máximo cuidado y atención, porque con “Deceptive Awareness” ha fijado su listón cerca de los dominios de los titanes del género, a los que podrían equipararse en un futuro próximo a poco que mejoren y purifiquen su ya de por sí valiosa fórmula. Cualquier amante del Doom / Death de corte melódico y melancólico, o simplemente del Doom Metal más allá de etiquetas fragmentarias, tiene una cita con ABLAZE IN HATRED. Cuando atraviese el umbral de etérea soledad que dibuja la portada de este disco, hallará una gema que se sitúa entre los lanzamientos destacados del año en su género.

Fans of My Dying Bride, Anathema,Swallow the Sun, Katatonia, Moonspell, and November's Doom will love the mix of doom and death metal on the new release from Finland's Ablaze in Hatred. Released on Firebox Records, Deceptive Awareness is one gloomy affair, dripping with melancholy and depression , as the band basically stays in one zone for much of the CD's seven lengthy tracks. It's an enjoyable zone however, especially if you like tortured death metal growls bubbling over plodding drums and heavy, doom laden guitar dirges. The occasional clean vocals of guitarist/keyboardist Mika Ikonen come into play on a few tracks, but for the most part he lays down plenty of haunting growls that are sure to chill your soul, especially on tunes like "Ongoing Fall" and "When the Blackened Candles Shine". Through all this doom and despair, there are no shortage of fine melodies to be heard, giving a down and out crusher like "To Breathe And To Soffocate" a memorable quality to go along with its mammoth Sabbath-like riffs and terrifying vocals. There are just enough keyboards splattered about to give some of these tracks a symphonic feel, but the main focal points are the atmosphere and the riffs.
It may be a little too plodding for some, but if you are a fan at all of atmospheric doom/death metal, this will be a must hear for you. An impressive debut from a promising young band from Finland, a country that is really starting to churn out some of the strongest young acts in metal these days.

Dass Firebox ein besonderes Händchen besitzt, was geniale Newcomer angeht, sollte sich nun mittlerweile herumgesprochen haben. Neu im Aufgebot zu finden sind seit kurzem Ablaze In Hatred, eine finnische Band, die sich im Jahre 2004 gründete, die sich dem atmosphärischen Doom verschrieben hat und teils aus Searing Meadow hervorging. Erste Kostproben gab es mit der Demo "Closure of Life" im letzten Jahr, danach folgte umgehend der Labelvertrag und im Herbst 2006 legt man nun das Debütalbum "Deceptive Awareness" vor.
Was man von Ablaze in Hatred dabei vorgesetzt bekommt, passt zu dieser tristen Jahreszeit wie die Faust aufs Auge. Emotionale, sphärische Doombögen voller Einsamkeit und Tristesse, dynamisch arrangiert, teils recht riffig agiert man auf einem äußerst perfekten Niveau. Sehr überraschend positiv ist das, was die junge Formation hier von sich gibt. "When the Blackened Candles Shine" ist förmlich ein Paradebeispiel für melancholisch düsteren Doom aus Suomi. Schleppende Gitarrenriffs bohren sich schmerzhaft in die Seele, die beigesteuerten Growls von Mika Ikonen tun dabei ihr übriges. Zugegeben, teilweise versucht man auch, sich ein wenig an Swallow the Sun zu orientieren ("Howls Unknown"), bleibt aber im Großen und Ganzen doch recht eigenständig. Recht dynamisch ist dabei auch das Gesamtbild des Albums, teils melancholisch, teils recht kontrastreiche Songs wechseln sich hier ab und geben dem Ganzen einen doch atmosphärischen Touch. "Ongoing Fall" macht seinem Titel alle Ehre, sphärische, teils auch malmende Gitarrenparts, kombiniert mit minimal Synthiespielen, symbolisieren hier einfach ein deprimiertes Klangkunstwerk, dem der letzte Track "Closure of Life" in nichts nachsteht.
Ablaze in Hatred haben ein Debüt abgeliefert, das sich wirklich sehen lassen kann. Freunde des sphärischen Doom Metals werden voll und ganz auf ihre Kosten kommen, soweit sei dies garantiert. "Deceptive Awareness" birgt insgesamt sieben wundervolle Tracks, die einen ganz schön runterziehen können. Was will da eine verlorene Seele mehr?!

Suomen vuodenaikoja hallitsee pitkä pimeys ja ankea räntäinen koleus. Auringon kadotessa yhä aikaisemmin taivaanrannan taakse, sateen ropistessa ja kylmien tuulien puhaltaessa osa väestöstä yrittää epätoivoisesti paeta ympäröivää todellisuutta neonvaloihin, purkkapoppi-iltamiin ja aivottomien kanojen bilehilebailuihin. Turhaan, sillä juhlien jälkeen odottaa entistä synkempi noutaja.
Osa sen sijaan kääntää kasvonsa kohti mustanpuhuvaa taivasta ja syleilee ympäröivää kurjuutta, ammentaen siitä uutta voimaa. Yksi tapa suhtautua kylmään Pohjolaan on soittaa liekehtivää pikametallia niin että kohme kaikkoaa sormista. Toinen tapa on sulautua tummaan, piehtaroida raskasmielisyydessä ja tunnelmoida hitaan murskaavassa äänimaisemassa. Ablaze In Hatred on valinnut jälkimmäisen tien, hautajaismaisen doom metallin tien.
Mika Ikosen murea kurahtelu on ensiluokkaista laatua, ja Ikosen kitarointi yhdessä perustajäsen Juhani Sannan kanssa kuljettaa hautapurtta eteenpäin. Basisti Miska ”Fall of the Leafe” Lehtivuori sekä rumpali Antti ”Searing Meadow” Hakkala soittavat tyylikkäästi yhteen, nostattaen melankolisia sävyjä kuplina pintaan.
Constant Stillnessin aaltojen kohina ja ambient-äänitausta tuo lisäsyvyyttä maan ja merenpinnan väliin. To Breathe And To Suffocaten viiden minuutin maahanpanovirsi alustaaa seremonian huipennuksen, Closure of Lifen. Ensilevy vahvistaa Suomen asemaa doomin kärkimaana. Kypsä, harkittu kokonaisuus imaisee kuulijansa metallin merihautaan, ja antaa helpottavan vapautuksen vasta elämän sulkeutumassa.

Ablaze in Hatred wurde anno 2004 in Helsinki gegründet. Drei der fünf Finnen gehören auch noch zum melodischen Todstahlgefüge von Searing Meadow. In meinem CD-Fach dreht sich nun also deren Debütscheibe gemächlich über die Runden. Enttäuschung macht sich breit, man erwartet von Firedoom Music jeweils überdurchschnittliche Qualität. Schade, dass ein Album einer jungen, talentierten Formation keinen besseren Eindruck hinterlässt. Das hat folgende Gründe:
Offenbar wurde das Masterband in ein Säurebad getaucht. Dabei wurden leider alle Brauen, Rauheiten und Ecken der Klänge abgeätzt. Als ob das noch nicht reichen würde: Mit einem dicken, kitschigen Keyboardlack wurden sämtliche Löcher und Ritzen zugepappt. Man hat Mühe, sich bei dieser aalglatten Produktion zu recht zu finden. Ständig rutscht das Ohr aus oder es verirrt sich irgendwo zwischen den Nummern. Es ist natürlich nur die halbe Wahrheit, wenn man die gesamte Schuld auf den Produzenten schiebt. So packend und faszinierend sind die einzelnen Kompositionen auch nicht. Auch der Sänger versucht zu gewollt tief zu grunzen, es klingt einfach nur unnatürlich.
Das ist jetzt alles etwas übertrieben, aber beschreibt das Problem dieses Werkes sehr treffend. Was nützt mir eine supersaubere und druckvolle Produktion, wenn das Klangmaterial näher bei der Uninspiriertheit und Langeweile angesiedelt ist als dort, wo sich die Atmosphäre und Magie vereinigen? Eine gewisse Erhabenheit will ich Ablaze in Hatred dennoch nicht absprechen. Entsprechende Ansätze sind jedenfalls vorhanden und belegen dies zeitweise recht eindrücklich.
Die Band wird sicherlich ihre Anhänger finden, vor allem im Lager der Shape of Despair oder Swallow the Sun Verehrer. Auch Gothic Metal Anhänger der finnischen Prägung sollten sich das Werk zu Gemüte führen, vorausgesetzt, man kann sich mit einer Anathema Kopie, die kitschigen Funeral Doom zelebriert, etwas anfangen.

Vor vielen Jahren, vor allen Humpa- / Black Metal- und Gothic-Trendwellen und massig exportiertem Einheitsbrei, zeichnete sich Finnland durch die Hervorbringung einiger hoch eigenständiger Death Metal-Bands aus. Anders als ihre US-amerikanischen oder schwedischen Kollegen hatten sie die Langsamkeit bereits früh entdeckt. Mancher wird sich noch an die mittlerweile legendären Unholy erinnern...
Ganz im Geiste dieser Vorzeit agieren die jungen, erst 2004 zusammengetretenen Landsmänner von Ablaze In Hatred und liefern mit "Deceptive Awareness" ein Debüt ab, wie es so lange keines zu hören gab. Andere Stimmen schwatzen einstimmig von Katatonias "Dance Of December Souls", das stilistisch ähnlich, ebenfalls ein vielversprechendes Erstlingswerk gewesen ist. Wie auch Blackheim Mitte der neunziger Jahre, frönen Ablaze In Hatred dem verhaltenen, melodischen Death Metal, der so eng nicht bemessen ist und den einen oder anderen Schritt in doomige oder schwarzmetallische Gefilde tut. Doch sind die sieben Stücke auf "Deceptive Awareness" trotz ihrer Death Metal-Geschaffenheit frei von ansonsten typischer Härte, frei von Hektik, Aggressivität und jeglichem Gelärme. Dabei gelingt Ablaze In Hatred diese Synthese eigentlicher widersinniger Eigenschaften sehr gut. Gefühlvolle Melodiebögen thronen über den tieftönenden Rhythmus-Gitarren, die stets präsent sind, doch nie dominieren. Anders als die ebenfalls vergleichbaren My Dying Bride (zu "Turn Loose The Swans"-Zeiten) klingen Ablaze In Hatred stets leicht, ohne jene bedrückende melancholische Schwere, die die Briten sonst auszeichnet. So ist "Deceptive Awareness" ein Album, das zu (fast) jeder Tageszeit und Stimmungslage seine volle Pracht entfalten kann. Auch wenn Schneetreiben im Dämmerlicht trotzdem sehr stimmig und schön wäre...

Vasta parin vuoden ikäisen Ablaze In Hatredin nimi lienee jo monien hidastelutunnelmoinnista pitävien huulilla. Helsinkiläisyhtyeessä riittää muissa liemissä keitettyjä tekijöitä, joten huomiota voi arvata tulleen hiukan jo sitäkin kautta. Taustalta löytyy niin Searing Meadow’ta kuin Fall Of The Leafeakin, joten aivan keltanokista ei siis kyse ole.
Ensikuuntelulla bändin voisi hätäisesti luokitella joksikin Swallow The Sunin vanavedessä hiihtäjäksi, mutta ei asia aivan niin onneksi ole, vaikka yhtäläisyyksiäkin toki löytyy. Ablaze In Hatredkin panostaa jylhään, painostavaan ja kolkkoon tunnelmaan, ja asiaan kuuluvia melodioita hitaasti etenevällä matkallaan kylvää, mutta kyllä bändi lähempänä suoranaista doomia on kuin jyväskyläläiset virkaveljensä.
Vaikka kyseessä on vasta yhtyeen debyyttilevy, niin kyllä materiaali valmiilta kuulostaa. Raakileet on onnistuneesti jätetty jonnekin treenitilojen pimeisiin nurkkiin. Erityisesti ensilevyksi tätä voisi pitää melko väkevänä esityksenä, mutta ehkä särmää voisi enemmänkin mukana olla. Totaaliseksi doomiksi Deceptive Awareness on vielä aika easy listening –kamaa, mutta kenties pyöristetyillä kulmilla ja heleillä melodioilla voittaa pari uutta fania aliarvostetun genren syövereihin.

2004 starten Ablaze Of Hatred in Helsinki, Finnland um dunkle, langsame, atmosphärische und zugleich harte Musik zu schaffen. Bislang hat die Kombo drei Promo CDs aufgenommen. „Decaptive Awareness“ ist die erste offizielle Langrille des Quartetts. Das Vorhaben der Band, die bereits genannten Eigenschaften in ihren Sound zu integrieren, ist gelungen. Und somit ist „Decaptive Awareness“ keine Scheibe für einen geselligen Abend, oder zum Nebenbeihören. Vielmehr eignet sie sich als Unterhaltung für einen verregneten, kalten Herbsttag. Die Produktion ist druckvoll und passt zur Musik. Lediglich der Drumsound klingt mir zu klinisch. Die Gitarrenarbeit ist gut, kann aber keinen Innovationswettbewerb gewinnen. Auch die zum festen Bestandteil gehörenden Keyboardarrangements klingen nie aufdringlich, sondern atmosphärisch und fügen sich gut in den Gesamtsound ein. Der Gesang ist tief, aber nicht gegrunzt. „Decaptive Awareness“ ist eine gute Scheibe geworden, auf der leider die zum „Selbstmord“, oder tiefer Trauer verleitenden Riffs ein wenig zu rar sind.

Crushingly slow and heavy, dripping with a melancholy, bleak atmosphere, Ablaze in Hatred have sludgily put themselves in the list of promising young bands that can play some damn good doom. Hailing from Finland, the band was started when Juhani Sanna and Mika Ikonen wanted to play music that was atmospheric, dark, and crushingly slow. A half-year later, they recruited Antti Hakkala and Miska Lehtivuori and Ablaze in Hatred was born. The vocals on this release, throat-rendingly unleashed by Ikonen, are what you would expect from a doom album; a slow, cold growl that does more for atmosphere than to get a message across, a la Slumber. It’d a good thing that the purpose of the vocals is more for atmosphere, because I also can’t understand a single word that is uttered throughout the demo. The guitars, provided by both Sanna and Ikonen, are also played to a doomy perfection, nothing is sped-up, nothing is forced, the harmonies and chugging-riff-accentuated melodies are all there, beautifully sludging along at their own pace. The bass (Lehtivuori) and the drums (Hakkala) are also solid, adding nothing jaw-dropping talent wise, but still adding to the ever-so important atmosphere of a damn good doom recording. The production is solid, especially considering that the band produced the record themselves. This is a damn solid demo, and I, as all you doom fans out there should be, am eagerly awaiting the full-length release that they started writing last October. This is a band to watch in the doom scene.

With a name like Ablaze in Hatred, I expected some heavy-duty doom/death, but this new band from Finland seems to have a deceptive name. This self-released promo MCD contains three tracks of doom/death, alright, but it's mid-tempo, melodic, and a bit on the light side. These four guys do it with plodding drums, mid-range growls, melodic riffs and some keyboard support. For some reason, it all sounds a bit 'distinctly Finnish' as well; it might be a hint of Shape Of Despair in there, or the general clean sound which I've heard on some Finnish releases. The first track, 'When the Blackened Candles Shine', is also the best because of its special catchy melody, but the whole MCD is actually pretty good. All of these tracks will be featured on the upcoming full length album, so if you think you might enjoy some mellow, mid-tempo doom/death, I warmly recommend Ablaze in Hatred to you.

Si bien esta agrupación surgió en 2004, sus músicos ya cuentan con cierta trayectoria por el underground finlandés. ABLAZE IN HATRED tiene entre sus filas a Juhani Sanna (KOLONNA) en guitarras y teclados; Mika Ikonen (SEARING MEADOW) en voz, guitarras y teclados; Miska Lehtivuori (FALL OF THE LEAFE) en bajo; y Antti Hakkala (SEARING MEADOW) en batería. "Closure of life" es su primer trabajo de estudio, donde la banda se presenta con un sonido absolútamente oscuro y algo etéreo. La propuesta está basada en un Doom Metal bien atmosférico, con ciertas melodías heavys y vocalizaciones propias del Death Metal. Este promo contiene tan solo tres canciones, pero muy extensas y con un sonido brillante, algo muy particular de las bandas del país de los mil lagos. "Closure of life" comienza con la lenta "When the blackened candles shine", un corte en el estilo de los primeros TIAMAT y sin riffs. La oscuridad a pleno sigue en "To breathe and to suffocate", donde las depresivas melodías cobran fuerza en las guitarras de Juhani y Mika, en este caso más cercanos a los PARADISE LOST de "Gothic". "Constant stillness" cierra este promo a puro Doom atmosférico, conformándose como la mejor de "Closure of life". Un CD que llegará a lo más profundo del alma de los amantes del Doom. Excelente comienzo!

Ablaze In Hatred ei nosta promodemollaan materiaalinsa tempoa ylinopeuslukemille, sillä kupletin juoni on hitaasti mutta raskaasti kuuntelijat alleen jyräävässä doom metalissa. Closure of Life on orkesterin debyyttiäänite, mutta se ei kuulu tuotokselta ainakaan negatiivisessa valossa, sillä bändi on täysin tietoinen siitä, mitä on tekemässä ja miten. Äänitteen erinomaisesta soundipolitiikasta saa kiittää Noisecamp -studiota, sillä soundimailma tukee esitettävää materiaalia täydellisesti: soundit raastavat kuuntelijoiden synkkyyshermoa musiikin vaatimalla tavalla. Orkesterin säveltaju on ihailtavaa, sillä kolmelle esitettävälle biisille on mittaa kertynyt kunnioitettavasti yli 20 minuuttia, mutta silti orkesteri pystyy pitämään biisien rakenteet kasassa viimeiseen nuottiin saakka. Bändin musisointi pohjautuu vuoren kokoisen kitaravalliin ja tunnelmaa tuotokselle tuodaan maalailevilla kosketinmelodioilla, joten turhanpäiväinen iloittelu ei saa synkkyydestä niskalenkkiä. Kuten monilla muillakin doom-patteristoilla, AIH:n laulu saa luvan toimia yhtenä taustasoittimena, sillä laulurintamalla ei juurikaan lähdetä matalaa, lohdutonta örinää leveämmille vesille sooloilemaan. Closure of Life on siinäkin mielessä erikoinen debyyttituotos, että se ei jätä juurikaan sanansijaa negatiivisille kommenteille, sillä demobändeille paljon kaivattua omaperäisyyttä löytyy bändin havittelemasta synkkyyden maksimoinnista. Vaikutteet ovat tietenkin havaittavissa, mutta täysin sopivassa suhteessa. Swallow The Sun ja muut kotimaiset doom -patteristot ovat saaneet uuden vakavasti otettavan heimoveljen. Odotan innolla kuulevani orkesterin seuraavia edesottamuksia, sillä surumielistä maalailumusiikkia ei ole koskaan liikaa tulevien syksyjen räntäsadepäiville.

Tämä tuorehko tapaus ei vauhdilla hurmaa, vaan teilauskeinona on hautajaissaaton hitaudella etenevä synkkä death/doom metal. Swallow The Sun kuuluu selvästi taustalla, mutta Ablaze In Hatred julistaa messuaan vieläkin tylymmin, mikä ei ole ollenkaan huono juttu. Vaikka tinkimättömyys on tässä kohden hyve, hieman lisää mausteita ja tarttuvuutta tarvittaisiin Constant Stillnessin malliin. Uskottavine örinöineen ja tunnelmallisine leadeineen Closure Of Life on kuitenkin kelpo tuotos, jonka näköjään Fireboxinkin miehistö on jo huomannut.

Ablaze In Hatred nació en el 2004, formado por un cuarteto que ya era parte de otras bandasfinlandesas de death metal melódico y gothic como Searing Meadow y Fall Of The Leafe las cuales ya tienen sus propios discos editados; desde el inicio deciden que el estilo del grupo va a ser una combinación de death/doom pesado y melódico a la vez y con variaciones un tanto oscuras, de esta forma se ponen a componer y tras unos meses entran al estudio a grabar este promo CD de tres temas titulado “Closure Of Life” conel cual han obtenido excelentes críticas y que además les permitió inmediatamente ser fichados para su disco debut por uno de los mejores sellos productores de bandas Doom, Death y Gothic de Finlandia: Firebox Records, el cual tiene entre sus filas a bandas como Swallow The Sun la cual es muy similar a Ablaze In Hatred pero este ultimo grupo tiene como dije pasajes oscuros. En cuanto el sonido es digno de cualquier álbum, claro y contundente los tres temas no bajan de los 5 minutos por lo que abarcan casi 24 minutos entre todos; When the Blackened Candles Shine es la primera canción concasi 10 minutos de duración es una canción lenta pero con una gran melodía con unos growls profundos y potentesy cuya fuerza la llevan la combinación de guitarras ritmicas y melodicas con teclados atmosfericos de fondo, si bien carece de variedad no cansa; To Breathe and to Suffocate es la segunda canción donde se nota más claro la influencia de Swallow The Sun y por que no de los primeros discos de Katatonia, con guitarras melódicas y lideres al inicio que dan paso a un ritmo doom pesado con voces black para volver de nuevo a las melodías del incio con voces guturales, el disco termina con Constant Stillness el cual sigue las líneas del pprimer tema, guitarras melodicas lentas que rozan el funeral doom y un teclado atmosferico de fondo con voces igual de guturales; en los tres temas la batería y el bajo se notan claros pero como es logico al tratarse de una agrpacióndoom/death el trabjo en estos instrumentos es basico y simple. Soy un seguidor asiduo de este tipo de metal y descubrir esta nueva banda me llena de expectativas para esperar su primer disco posiblemente a finales de este año. Ablaze In Hatred s'est formé courant 2004 à Helsinki (Finlande) à l'initiative de deux amis, Juhani Sanna (guitariste de Kolonna ) et Mika Ikonen (chanteur, guitariste et claviériste issu du groupe de death mélodique Searing Meadow ), dans l'optique de jouer une musique sombre, lente et atmosphérique à la fois. Les deux compères sont rejoints en été 2005 par Antti Hakkala (batteur de Searing Meadow ) et Miska Lehtivuori (bassiste des mélodeatheux Fall of the Leafe ). Ils sont donc fins prêts pour enregistrer la présente démo Closure of Life , sortie en septembre 2005, qui a reçu un écho très favorable à travers la scène Doom.
Et on comprend bien pourquoi, tant la musique délivrée par le pourtant jeune combo respire la maîtrise et la qualité à toute épreuve. En trois pistes pour quasiment 25 minutes, on sent qu'on n'a pas affaire simplement à un autre bon groupe de Doom Death, car même si l'ensemble semble classique, la formation arrive à obtenir son propre son par un savant mélange entre la voix growlée et les guitares aériennes accompagnées par de belles nappes de synthé, un mix rappelant par moments fortement Shape of Despair (particulièrement sur When the Blackened Candles Shine ) et November's Doom (surtout sur To Breathe and to Suffocate ), voire les premiers Anathema . Avouons qu'il y a pire comme influences tout de même ! Ce qui est frappant c'est la simplicité qui se dégage de ces 3 pistes. C'est simplement beau, franc et prenant. La production est parfaite (on est clairement très loin de dISEMBOWELMENT par exemple), le tout est parfaitement orchestré, créant un ensemble homogène. Une sorte de magnifique voyage onirique au cœur de la tristesse et de la mélancolie en somme, vraiment surprenant de qualité pour un si jeune groupe, à rapprocher dans l'esprit et la démarche des Français d' Inborn Suffering et de Ningizzia .
Ainsi donc Closure of Life nous permet de miser gros sur Ablaze In Hatred , futur grand de la scène doom death. Même si les influences se font encore un peu trop ressentir, gageons que le groupe exploitera pleinement le potentiel qui est le sien. Le premier album, Deceptive Awareness , sort d'ailleurs cette année et s'annonce comme une perle du genre. A suivre.

Nimi Ablaze in Hatred luo kuvan varsin vimmaisesta musiikista, mutta viime vuonna perustettu turkulaisnelikko puristaa vihansa aggressiivisen räyhäämisen sijaan syksyiseksi melankoliaksi. Noisecamp-studiossa äänitettyä debyyttidemoa voikin kuvailla tuomiopainotteiseksi versioksi Rapturesta. Moderni laskuhumaladoom lipsahtaa helposti apaattiseksi ja mukasurulliseksi monotoniaksi, mutta Ablaze in Hatred osaa vierittää hitaita riffejään eteenpäin juuri sopivaa tahtia, joten kuulija ei joudu pitkästymään. Tunnelman säilyttäminen tuomiometallissa ei ole tehtävistä helpoimpia, mutta muun muassa Searing Meadow'ssa ja Fall of the Leafessa kokemusta kerännyt miehistö pitää taitavasti langat käsissään. Mika Ikonen murisee täyteläisesti mutta juuri musiikkiin sopivan sävyisästi. Kokonaisuuden voisi helposti pilata liian aggressiivisella raakkumisella. Todellisten haasteiden pariin yhtye pääsee myöhemmin, jos ja kun pitkäsoiton kasaaminen tulee ajankohtaiseksi. Tällainen parikymmenminuuttinen tunnelma-annos on kokemuksena sangen pirteä, mutta saman materiaalin venyttäminen pitkäsoiton mittaan ei suoraan tuo maailmaan mitään lisäarvoa, joten enemmän vaihtelua ja erilaisia koukkuja on syytä olla hihassa.

Ablaze In Hatred is a fairly new band (established in 2004). The band members are maybe more known from their other bands Kolonna, Searing Meadow and Fall Of The Leafe. This year showed the release of their first promo CD, Closure Of Life. This demo includes 3 songs and 23 minutes of pure doom metal with death vocals. Maybe the closest similar band would be Swallow The Sun, but without clean vocals. Heavy guitars, slow riffing, dark and sorrowful atmosphere spiced with nice keyboards. All three songs are equally good and nothing too similar compared to each other. There are also small variations within the songs, so they don't get too repetitive. Absolutely right music for this time of year! Those of you, who like Swallow The Sun and this kind of metal in general, check these guys out! I promise, you won't be disappointed. The album can be ordered from the band's website for 4 euros (5 outside Finland), so go on and make an order. I myself wait for the forthcoming full-length album.

Ablaze in Hatred is a new born band, they formed last year and before some days they released their debut demo CD with the title "Closure of Life", in which you can find three tracks and more than twenty minutes of pure dark / atmospheric metal music. Again with Ablaze in Hatred we have some things that every fan of dark music want to hear, so we have slow and heavy guitar riffs, a sorrowful atmosphere and great keyboards who gives also another option of this release. Also the vocals are mainly death metal ones. If you know the band Swallow the Sun, then maybe you will have a small picture of the music from Ablaze in Hatred but the band had used a lot of their personal sound inside their songs and their compositions are well worked with interesting ideas and generally the band can pass to the listener all the feelings and the whole atmosphere that they want to express via this demo cd. I am sure if they will worked more and become more unique we will hear for them really soon. Don't forget that the band has already start to write new material for their debut album. So stay tuned and order this demo release.

Only the other day, some friend of mine mentioned that there seems to be very few bands that manage to create efficient old school doom metal with any degree of success, and only the mighty Swallow The Sun (see the cd reviews section) sprang to mind. Most of the bands evolving around the doom metal spheres add some strange and for my opinion useless psychedelic surroundings to their doom metal background. Ablaze In Hatred are a different story and they can be regarded as the perfect inheritors of Majesty / Ater. «Closure of Life» has got a very old school atmosphere and I suppose the reason for that is that this is a lot more emotive than anything else. Ablaze In Hatred are depressive without sounding funeral and their music is heavy without being repetitive or boring. It strikes me as being very well balanced and professional depressive doom metal totally independent of any nowadays trends. Created in the year 2004, Ablaze in Hatred already impose their own trademark with their first demo and this is eventually quite natural that they already sign a deal with the doom metal reference Firebox Records. You can expect great things from this band in the future.

If you're in the mood for an belittling battering of of desolate despondency, look no further than Finland's Ablaze In Hatred. Fusing Doom fundamentals with elements from its varying sub-genres (most notably drone and death), this 3-track, 23-minute taste of things to come has well and truly whet my appetite. 'When The Blackened Candles Shine' is an exercise in controlled restraint, with a morose atmosphere, crawling pace and yet packing plenty of punch, the opener is as good an introduction to a band as one can imagine. Seamlessly injecting moments of ambiance to break-up the song and maintain the mood, Ablaze In Hatred is clearly comprised of well-versed musicians. The ensuing 'To Breathe And To Suffocate' ensues and is my favourite of the triplet of tracks. Great riffs combine with excellent keyboard and sluggish vocals, bass and drums to deliver a powerfully emotive cut prior to the closing track, which has a very conclusive overtone and would be as suitable for the rolling credits of a tragic film with a disappointingly ending ad the end of this Promo EP. Ablaze In Hatred have already honed their songwriting and material to a point where I'm eagerly awaiting their first official release. 4€ (Finland) and 5€ (international) will secure you a copy of the EP. Kansikuvasta lähtien tietää, missä maisemissa tällä kertaa poljetaan: suomaisema ja cyaniidin -sävyisiä puita. Matka tulee olemaan pitkä ja raskas. No ei nyt sentään niin pitkä, tällä kertaa reilut 20 minuuttia. Suomalaisen doomin genre on varttumassa ja yksi kerhon uusista jäsenistä on Ablaze In Hatred. Raskasta ja tunnelmallista, sanoisinko jopa suoryömintä-tunnelmallista doomia on siis tarjolla. Syksyn 2004 -ja kevään 2005 kautta yhtye asettui nykyiseen statukseensa. Jäsenet koostuvat yhtyeistä Kolonna, Searing Meadow ja Fall Of The Leafe. Kolme raastavan pitkää matkaa tarjoava Closure Of Life on varma teos, ja se nautitaankin mieluiten synkän mielen kanssa. "When The Blackened Candles Shine" venyy jopa yhdeksään minuuttiin perus doom-suorituksien kautta. Siis venyviä kitarataustoja sekä manaavaa murinaa Mika Ikosen toimesta. Herra muuten kuulostaa paikoitellen vasta talviuniltaan heränneeltä, äkäiseltä karhulta. Toisen kappaleen "To Breathe And To Suffocate" herättää henkiin Mika Ikosen, M. Kotamäki -tyylinen (Swallow The Sun) alkumurahdus, josta kuulija tietää, että vaellus voi jälleen alkaa. Suosta noustaan nyt jo seisaalleen tarkastamaan mitä päivä tarjoaa. Helposti voisi kuvitella tälläisen veisun soivan päässään, kun miekat ovat kalisseet ja taistelu on ohi. Autuus ja laahaava tunnelma, mmmm. "Constant Stillness" taasen tarjoaa rauhallisuutta ja varmaa doom-poljentoa, ilman turhia koukkuja. Kokopitkää teosta odotellessa voidaankin miettiä: saadaanko Ablaze In Hatredistä haastaja esim. Swallow The Sunille? Näin voikin tapahtua, jos kokopitkälle saadaan uusia temppuja ja ässiä hihaan, mutta after all, tästä on vielä matkaa. Hyvä ja taipuisa kokonaisuus, joka ei juuri erehdyksiä osoita.

Helsinki ja big city nights! Jeah! Rock n' roll! NO EI TODELLAKAAN. On tainnut kasarivaihde jäädä näiltä pääkaupunkiseudun kasvateilta väliin. Nyt pusketaan suoraan haudasta, vaikka suoranaista funeral doomia, eikä oikeastaan mitään doomia ole tarjolla. Silti sitäkin synkempää laahausta Ablaze in Hatred tarjoilee. Ja kukas väijyntää vapaa-ajallaan harrastava heikkomieli ei siitä pitäisi. Hitaasti ja vielä hitaammin… Kyseessä on tämän synkän nelikon debyyttidemo ja se sisältää erittäin mahtavat, etten sanoisi massiiviset kolme kappaletta suomen melankoliaa ryhditettynä todella tuskaisella ahdistuksella. Vertaukselta Swallow the Suniin ja Obscurantiin ei voi välttyä ja tuskin on tarvettakaan, on selvääkin selvempää, että Raivion johtamaa joukkuetta on korva tarkkana kyllä kuunneltu. Ei haittaa, en paljonkaan alemmaksi Ablazea asettelisi omassa arvoasteikossani. Ensimmäinen, yhdeksän ja puolen minuutin, When the Blackened Candles Shine -avausraidan pituus kuulostaa demobändille täysin käsittämättömälle. Kuitenkaan kappale ei missään vaiheessa puuduta, ei nukututa eikä se todellakaan, ei todellakaan, tuo nukkumattia mieleen. Vaikka musiikki on hidasta ja laahaavaa se säilyttää intensiteettinsä täydellisesti ja juurikaan parempaa laulajaa kuin Mika Ikonen ei bändi olisi voinut riveihinsä haalia. On meinaan herralla äänihuulten kohdalla jonkinlainen pahanlainen vamma, ei tuollaista ääntä voi saada aikaan. Ollaan matalalla kuin Telluksen sydän Huh, huh… Kappaleen huippu saavutetaan vasta seitsemän minuutin jälkeen, jolloin melodisen tunnelmoinnin päätteeksi runtataan ja kovaa, ei nopeasti mutta silti täydellä voimalla. Kakkosraita To Breathe And to Suffocate kuulostaa nimeltään. Kappale on kaunis ja samalla tukahduttava. Ensimmäinen huuto saattelee kappaleen piinaavien kitaramelodioiden kautta syntikkakiertoon ja murinan sekä apaattisten rumpujen tanssiin. Annetaan julmien kitaroiden odottaa taustalla, kunnes niiden aika taas koittaa Black Sabbathin tyyliin ennen kahta minuuttia. Ei voi kuin pyyhkiä nautinnon hikeä otsaltaan… Kolmas ja levyn, ikävä kyllä, lopettava Constant Stillness aloittaa herkästi ja ei iskekään kuin kirves, joka on tähän asti lihaani silponut. Ei kappaleessa ole mitään vikaa, mutta kahden edellisen jälkeen tähän ei ollut varautunut. Nyt ollaan hieman liikaa jo kauniissa maisemissa, vaikka masentuneena kuitenkin. Ja viimeistään Mikan ääni tekee selväksi, että kukkaketo on ennemminkin luuketo. No, levyn huonoin raita kuitenkin… Uskomaton kokonaisuus demobändiltä, ja nyt Swallow the Sunin ollessa ns. se kova juttu luulisi levy-yhtiöiden innostuvan tästäkin tulokkaasta. Ja niin tekikin! Firebox signasi yhtyeen, eikä turhaan, nimittäin Suomeen mahtuuu vielä monta tämän tyylisuunnan edustajaa …

Ablaze in Hatredin kannen nähtyäni, päättelin yhtyeen soittavan synkkää musiikkia. Kansi johdatti minut oikeille jäljille, koska Ablaze in Hatred ei ole sitä ns. bilemusiikkia. Raskasta, lähes ahdistavan hitaita melodisia riffejä, jonka päälle laulu murhaa bassovoittoisella mörinällä. Ablaze in Hatredilla on palaset kohdallaan. Mikään ei töki cd:llä ja se on erittäin hyvä asia. Kansiin olisi voinut panostaa hieman enemmän, mutta yksinkertaisuudessaan ne toimivat. Bändi kuulostaa aika paljon Spinefarmin Shape of Despairilta, ja tällä hetkellä Ablaze in Hatred vakuuttaa enemmän kun Shape of Despair aikoihin.
